May 18 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Arch Creek Trust Monthly Meetings

We will meet this Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Arch Creek Park Shelter at 10am.

Dade Heritage Trust Award
We are pleased to report that the Dade Heritage Trust selected and honored the Arch
Creek Trust as one of the recipients of the annual prestigious Preservation Awards at
this year’s April ceremony, held at the historic Coral Gables Women’s Club. The award
was recognition for our group’s contributions to preserving the rich heritage and
historical significance of Miami Dade County’s Arch Creek Park that is also a State of
Florida Archeological site.

Dirtiest Water Body in South Florida
After reading the the Miami Herald article in 2023 identifying Arch Creek as the
“dirtiest water body” in South Florida, the Arch Creek Trust worked with Friends of the
Enchanted Forest to create an informational community meeting with slide
presentations by DERM and Miami Waterkeeper.

Please note that Miami Waterkeeper only began sampling West Arch Creek in June 2022. But in
only a short while, its numbers have been staggering — out of all 27 sites, it failed the most
bacteria tests, with a 98.1% fail rate last year. (The creek passes through both Arch Creek Park
and Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park, eventually flowing into Biscayne Bay.)

We have hopeful news! The meeting was also attended by City of North Miami
representatives and staff. We have been advised that with the support of Mayor
Desulme, the City Grants team will apply this month for a State grant that has $135
million available for state-wide waterway cleanups. State Representative Fabian
Basabe met with us May 5th to pledge his full support for state funds for Arch Creek
clean up.
